Who would not love to possess few pieces of jewelry? Jewelry is considered to be an asset to the family. It is an heirloom and has been so for many centuries all over the world. The jewels are made using the precious minerals like gold, silver and platinum. The jewels that are made from these metals can be studded with precious stones like diamond, emerald, rubies and so on.
Jewels made from bones, wood and ivory are very much in vogue today. These jewels are called the natural or the organic body jewelry. In olden days the organic jewelry made from bone and teeth was worn by the tribal community. Today it is an upcoming industry. These jewels are hand-made and involve a great patience and skill.
There is a wide variety of natural body jewelry available in the market. The variety ranges from ear rings, belly rings, nose rings, eyebrow rings and so on. The organic jewelry that is available today is the replica of the ones that were used by the ancient civilization. There is a huge market for the organic jewels from Indonesia and South American countries.
Before Using Organic Jewelry
Remember that the organic jewelry is made from raw materials like animal bones, horns, teeth, wood, and bamboo and so on. The organic jewelry is not sterilized. They have to be cleaned before using. The natural jewelry should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long hours. Avoid using the natural jewels while swimming and bathing. Never expose these jewels to extreme temperature.
Ways to Take Care of Organic/Natural Jewelry
Special care should be taken to preserve the organic jewelry. The life expectancy of the natural jewels depends on the care that is imparted and the way you handle them. Each type of natural jewelry, wood, bone, horn, has to be taken care in its own way.
1. Bone jewels can be washed or sponged with damp cloth. Mild soap can be used to clean the jewel. To polish the jewel you may use tea tree oil. Oil that is commonly used to polish organic bone jewels is jojoba oil. Remember, never to soak the bone jewels either in water or in the polishing oil. The reason is it will swell.
2. Horn jewelry can be cleaned in the same way as the bone jewelry. To ensure that the jewels remain in good condition clean them once in three months. However, it depends on how often the jewelry is worn.
3. Jewels made of bamboo are also very popular. Though bamboo is water resistance, the inner layers of bamboo absorbs water. Therefore, avoid using bamboo jewels frequently during rainy season. To polish the bamboo jewels use jojoba oil or tea tree oil.
4. Wooden jewelry can be wiped with damp cloth followed by a dry cloth. Use tea tree oil to add luster to the jewel.
5. Obsidian, stone or fossil Jewelry – great care has to taken to increase the life expectancy of these jewels. Avoid cleaning these jewels in extreme temperatures of water. You have to use mild soap and room temperature water for cleaning.
